Mat Schulz, the Artistic Director and co-founder of Unsound, was a pioneer in employing a music festival as a force for commissioning new work, rather than simply presenting existing projects, an idea that was borrowed from arts festivals has now spread more widely. Mat will describe this journey, as well as a few of the many new works he has commissioned, ranging from the large scale involving orchestras and well known artists to small collaborations – and the different ways in which they have been funded. Participants will form small groups to create their own ideas for commissioned works, which they can discuss further between sessions, and present on the last day of Unsound Lab.
