What do the soundscapes of new forms of statehood sound like? What are the anthems of network states?
Sonic Post-States is a speculative audio experiment inspired byThe Network State: How To Start a New Country by Balaji Srinivasan – a book hailed by Forbes as a groundbreaking vision of the future. In Srinivasan’s model, a state does not begin with territory, but with an online community united by shared values. “A network state is a highly aligned online community capable of collective action, that crowdfunds territory around the world, and eventually gains diplomatic recognition from existing states.” [source:thenetworkstate.com]
During the workshop the participants will explore the concept of the network state and its seven foundational steps, as outlined by Srinivasan. Participants will be divided into factions, and each group will create a moral constitution (the ideological foundation, principles, and goals of the community) and an anthem (a sonic representation of the post-state’s character). The workshop is both a thought experiment and a sound-based exploration – a political laboratory and an exercise in systemic imagination.
