Alif Hilal, formerly known as Lyra Pramuk (b. 1990, United States), creates a rare form of devotional music that harmonizes the open-ended potential of the human voice with rapidly evolving technology, compelled by collectivity, spirituality, consciousness, and care. The Berlin-based, American multidisciplinary artist – vocalist, composer, producer, DJ, performance artist, and astrologer – draws from classical training and Berlin’s club culture to shape a genre-fluid practice informed by folk, house, techno, gospel, and experimental techniques. Her work has earned international acclaim from Pitchfork, Mixmag, and Vogue, among others. Alif’s second album Hymnal, a book of transformational worship songs, explores the ecstatic genesis of sacred ritual practices, expanding themes introduced on her celebrated 2020 debut Fountain (released on Bedroom Community). Created with the Sonar Quartett string ensemble, Hymnal imagined a symphony of the universe oriented toward collective liberation. Previously, she has been commissioned by: Hermes, acting as musical director and performer in an outdoor piece with French dance troupe (LA)HORDE (2023); Manchester Collective which resulted in her chamber composition Quanta (2023); scored Alessandro Roja’s film With the Grace Of God presented at the Venice Festival (2023); to contribute to exhibitions by visual artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen (2025); and for an opera collaboration at Performa Biennale New York with with sculptor Tau Lewis (2025).
