Mat Schulz, the Artistic Director and co-founder of Unsound, was a pioneer in employing a music festival as a force for commissioning new work, rather than simply presenting existing projects, an idea borrowed from arts festivals that has now spread more widely. Mat will describe this journey, as well as a few of the new works he has commissioned, ranging from the large scale involving orchestras and well known artists to small collaborations – and the different ways in which they have been funded. He will be joined by Harry Glass & Laurens von Oswald, the co-founders and directors of Outer GmbH and co-curators of Berlin Atonal. Through their work together Harry and Laurens have developed an approach that consistently operates across disciplines and refuses fixed formats – building structures that allow environments of art, music and performance to exist on their own terms, at their own scale and duration. Participants will form small groups to create their own ideas for commissioned works, which they will develop during more intimate workshops with Mat, Harry and Laurens and discuss further between sessions, to finally present a pitch on the last day of Unsound Lab.
